ESL Shipping: How to communicate effectively during crisis?

The shipping company ESL Shipping (subsidiary of Aspo Oyj) wanted to strengthen their practices and abilities to handle media relations especially during challenging and crisis situations. When handled effectively, crisis communication will protect company’s reputation, allows more resources to be spent on e.g. rescue operations and it can help to prevent any additional damage.

A full-day media and crisis communication training was carried out for the company in Miltton’s own studio. The training gave the participants concrete tools on how to prepare for media interviews, and enforced their abilities to communicate effectively by utilizing their own personality. Miltton also helped ESL Shipping in forming a crisis communication plan that includes the challenges and key issues in constantly changing media landscape.

The training included:

  • an extensive toolkit including the following themes: the psychology of credibility, media guidelines, outlook on the change in the news industry, tools for verbal and non-verbal communication, managing stakeholder expectations, and increasing the energy and conciseness of your personal communication
  • multiple rounds of videotaped interview rehearsals
  • individual feedback

Matti-Mikael Koskinen, Managing Director, ESL Shipping Ltd commented the training:

“Our experience of the media training was very positive. The training significantly improved the readiness of our whole crisis communication group to face various crisis situations and to deal with them professionally and smoothly.”
