Businesses at the forefront: The Finland Pavilion brings solutions together
Businesses and industry organizations have come together to create a dedicated Finland Pavilion at COP30, bringing together public and private sector actors.
“The Finland Pavilion in Dubai was a great success. It brought together dozens of companies, cities, NGOs, and universities. It gave visibility and impact to Finnish climate solutions and expertise,” Nummelin explains.
The presence of Finnish companies in Belém is strategically important. The role of business in climate policy is growing, as climate goals cannot be achieved by governments alone.
“Businesses support climate action and provide concrete solutions.”
Behind the Scenes: Compromises, emotions and intense negotiations
While climate conferences may appear to be about formal speeches and declarations, the real work happens behind the scenes.
“It’s quite chaotic. Even though there are thousands of participants and a wide range of side events, the key negotiations are handled by a relatively small group. Countries and interest groups negotiate until the very last minute to reach a consensus that everyone can commit to,” Nummelin describes.
Negotiations often stretch late into the night, and emotions can run high.
“It’s about making compromises, exchanging views, and building trust. It’s intense and demanding work.”
Finland’s lead negotiator hopes for stronger emissions targets
Nummelin hopes that COP30 will lead to concrete commitments to strengthen emissions reduction targets in line with the Paris Agreement and accelerate the phase-out of fossil fuels.
While climate summits are sometimes criticized for being ineffective, Nummelin emphasizes the value of continued cooperation.
“It’s noteworthy that the vast majority of countries still want to work together on climate issues. But agreements must not remain just words—their implementation is what truly matters.”
Climate policy is part of comprehensive security
Finally, Nummelin reminds us that climate policy is not separate from international politics—it is part of comprehensive security.
“While traditional security policy dominates the news agenda, long-term stability requires addressing the climate crisis. We need to strengthen this connection even further.”
