Lejos – Sustainability due diligence

Miltton worked with Lejos, a Finnish family-owned food and non-alcoholic beverage distributor, to strengthen sustainability risk mitigation in its value chain.

The aim of the project was to better understand the most significant human rights and environmental impacts across Lejos’s operations and value chain, and to design a risk-based due diligence approach for their systematic management, especially focusing on sustainable sourcing.

Phase 1: Impact assessment

The work began by screening for potential and actual impacts on people and the environment within Lejos’s value chain, using public sources and vast background materials provided by Lejos. Impacts were then prioritized based on their severity and likelihood. The impact assessment considered the requirements of the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive and the EU Deforestation Regulation, as well as the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises.

Phase 2: Due diligence approach

Next, a detailed due diligence approach was designed for continuous, risk-based management of identified sustainability impacts, with particular focus on the supply chain. The approach provides risk criteria and practical measures for managing risks related to raw materials, products, manufacturers and other business partners, depending on their risk level, as well as suggestions for further integration into existing organizational processes. Miltton also provided a due diligence policy draft and recommendations for next steps in sustainability due diligence work.
