Remeo – Double materiality assessment

Strategic sustainability at the core of circular economy – Double materiality and ESRS gap assessement for Remeo

Remeo, a Finnish circular economy company, processes waste into new raw materials. Together with Miltton, Remeo carried out its first double materiality assessment and a reporting gap analysis aligned with the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS). The work strengthens Remeo’s strategic sustainability efforts and builds capacity for future reporting and communication.

Context

The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) requires companies to assess their sustainability-related impacts, risks, and opportunities in line with the principle of double materiality. This process supports not only regulatory compliance but also strategic decision-making. Miltton conducted Remeo’s first double materiality assessment in close collaboration with the company’s project team.

Output

The process began with a comprehensive context analysis, covering Remeo’s business model, strategy, stakeholder landscape and operating environment. Stakeholder interviews were carried out, and the identification and evaluation of impacts, risks and opportunities (IRO) were facilitated using a tailored assessment tool.

The outcome was a clearly defined set of material sustainability topics across environmental, social and governance dimensions, aligned with the ESRS. The process and results were documented in a structured way, while also identifying areas where current reporting practices could be further developed.

This work enables Remeo to define which sustainability information to highlight in its reports and to focus its efforts on the issues most material to the business.

Insight & impact highlights

  1. A structured and stakeholder-driven double materiality analysis process in line with the requirements of the CSRD.

  2. Identification, assessment and documentation of key sustainability topics and their related impacts, risks and opportunities across the value chain to support strategic decision-making.

  3. Deepening the understanding of regulatory developments and sustainability trends within the industry.

Our CSRD project progressed smoothly with Miltton. The process was well-structured and stayed on schedule throughout, which gave us confidence in adopting this new approach to sustainability reporting. Miltton’s expertise complemented our own in an area where we did not yet have internal capabilities, and the collaboration provided us with a strong foundation for developing our sustainability reporting.

As a circular economy operator, sustainability is at the core of our business. For us, it is not just an obligation but also an opportunity — we believe that by developing it systematically, we can ensure that our lead over competitors will only continue to grow.
