What does the future hold for Europe and global security? Q&A with Charly Salonius-Pasternak

We sat down with Charly Salonius-Pasternak to find out what he learned from writing his new book Tuntematon tulevaisuus (“The unknown future”) and what companies need to think of right now in terms of geopolitics.

Charly Salonius-Pasternak is an expert in geopolitics and the CEO of Nordic West Office, the Miltton-owned advisory and think tank specialized in geopolitics and scenario planning. Nordic West Office helps its clients recognize and respond to the global forces that affect them.

Charly’s newest book, Tuntematon tulevaisuus (“The unknown future”), came out in early October. In it, he explores the shifting landscape of global security through candid conversations with top-level politicians, officials, and scholars. The book offers fresh insights into how major powers make strategic decisions and what it means for Finland and Europe.

Q: The book features conversations with top experts – which discussion stood out to you the most, and why?

Each conversation was chosen deliberately, and they all offered something unique. But if I had to highlight a common thread, it would be the emphasis on intellectual curiosity. When I asked each expert for advice to those trying to understand global politics and societal change, nearly all responded with some version of: “Read widely and seek out diverse perspectives.” That struck me. It’s a simple yet powerful reminder that understanding complexity requires effort, openness, and a willingness to challenge one’s assumptions. That ethos shaped the book – it’s not only about presenting answers but about inviting readers into the kind of conversations that help us ask better questions and look at the world from many different perspectives.

Q: What surprised you the most in these conversations?

What surprised me – or perhaps what I was most gratified by – was the depth of engagement. These weren’t superficial exchanges. The people I spoke with were willing to wrestle with difficult questions, to reflect openly, and to share insights that go beyond headlines or policy briefs. I wanted the book to feel like readers were eavesdropping on real conversations between people who care deeply about the future. If that “fly on the wall” feeling comes through, then I’ve succeeded in one of my goals.

Q: Nordic West Office helps companies navigate the changing world of geopolitics. What kind of questions are on the minds of Finnish and European CEOs right now?

The dominant concern is uncertainty: geopolitical instability, shifting alliances, and the erosion of long-standing assumptions. But it’s not just about risk; it’s also about opportunity. CEOs are asking: How do we position ourselves to not only survive but thrive in this environment? They want to understand how global dynamics might reshape markets, supply chains, technological changes and strategic priorities. Increasingly, they’re looking for tools – such as scenarios – that help them think beyond the short term, to build resilience and strengthen the ability of leadership teams to consider the impact of geopolitics on their business.

Q: How does Nordic West Office help companies or other organizations understand geopolitical risks and their impact on business?

Our core methodology is scenario planning. We build structured, plausible futures ranging from global macro scenarios to more focused regional or thematic ones, such as transatlantic relations, defense technologies, or sustainability transitions. These scenarios aren’t predictions; they’re tools for thinking. They help organizations stress-test strategies, uncover blind spots, and prepare for a range of outcomes. We also run workshops and simulations that bring these scenarios to life, enabling leadership teams to grapple with uncertainty in a concrete, actionable way.

Q: You’re about to update your Global Scenarios. Tell us a little more about that.

Yes, we’re launching the third iteration of our Global Scenarios this winter and spring (2026). This update is essential. The world has changed dramatically over the past few years, and our scenarios need to reflect that. We’re working with hand-picked companies and organizations across different sectors over a four-module program, with each module including a Helsinki-based session and a fact-finding mission abroad:

  1. Europe’s New Security Posture, including a fact-finding mission to Brussels in January 2026
  2. Direction of the United States & Geo-Economic Order, including a fact-finding mission to Washington DC in February 2026
  3. Global Power, Reshaped: China & Global South, including a fact-finding mission to Dubai in March 2026
  4. AI, Futures & Strategic Foresight, including a fact-finding mission to Silicon Valley in May 2026.

Organizations can choose how they want to participate – they can join us on the whole journey or just the Helsinki-based sessions, or only the kick-off and closing events. No matter what package they choose, we will run tailored scenario workshops for all participants between May and August, and everyone will receive a final written report and scenario materials. Throughout the whole scenario journey, the goal is not just to inform, but to equip decision-makers with the mindset and tools needed to lead through uncertainty.
